Exploring Circular Building Solutions with Stellenbosch University

Shifting boundaries within the building & construction Industry.

Innovation at its best!

Impact Hub Cape Winelands recently engaged with the Department of Civil Engineering at Stellenbosch University to learn more about their pioneering research into alternative building materials.

Their work focuses on developing a low-cost, renewable replacement for cement derived from construction waste — a breakthrough that could reduce the housing deficit, cut waste sent to landfills, and open new economic opportunities for local contractors. For Impact Hub, this represents the type of ecosystem collaboration that strengthens the impact economy. Our role is not only to connect research to the real economy but also to bridge the gap between academia, entrepreneurs, and municipalities.

This engagement reflects our mission: to convene unlikely allies and create an enabling environment for community-owned businesses. By linking researchers, funders, and local entrepreneurs, Impact Hub Cape Winelands helps ensure that groundbreaking academic innovation can translate into affordable housing solutions, economic inclusion, and circular economy practices in the Cape Winelands — and potentially across South Africa.
